Hatcha at Life Festival 2010

Hatcha

“No one DJ or indeed producer can claim sole credit for dub-step . But when the history of the genre gets told, no DJ has ever had, or perhaps ever will again, have so much influence over the course of the genre as Hatcha. It’s no overstatement to say the entire genre bares his stamp.”
Martin Clark – blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com
Starting off in the Big Apple Records shop in Croydon, Hatcha watched as dub step emerged from the dark garage scene in the late 90s. He was the mastermind behind the very first ‘Dub-step Allstars’ compilation, and soon the Big Apple became the musical headquarters for the dub scene in its embryonic days. Now after 18 years DJing, he is known as the Godfather of dub-step, and continuing to firmly cement his name in music history.
Hatcha does’t take sole responsibility for the genre’s success however, he is quick to credit the DJs and producers working hard to create the high quality music we love, and of course the benefits of technology when it comes to spreading the joy.
“It’s the brilliant production & DJing skills which attracts the ravers and I think the internet has played a huge roll by giving people easy access to the sound across the globe. Dub-step has really embraced the digital side of things to promote itself.”
Hatcha wants to ensure dub-step doesnt break up into various divisions like so many music genres do. He believes in a united scene, where ravers can enjoy the different characteristics found in the various DJing and production styles on offer, creating a powerful mesh of dub-step and a tighter family.
“I think keeping all the genres of dub-step under one term is important because if we start to break it up it will affect the scene just like in drum and bass. You find that you separate the ravers, and it is good to have a line-up of DJs and producers all playing their own style of the sound; it makes the scene stronger and keeps everyone as one big family.”
Hatcha runs his Kiss FM radio show alongside Crazy D and was the first DJ to host a commercial radio show based solely around dub-step. But this is only the beginning for Hatcha, as he will be firing out more beats and remixes for 2010, as well as launching his new Sin City label and events alongside fellow Dub-step legend N Type.
Dub-step is definitely the freshest sound to come out of London for a long time, and there is plenty of life left in it, so brace yourself for a lot more of Hatcha in 2010.
